Finally, I would like to thank my family for their support during my studies at the University of Louisville. iv ABSTRACT The purpose of this thesis is to develop a fast and accurate correspondence component for the CardEye active vision system. Correspondence is the first part of the stereo vision problem that must be solved and is also the most important, since the correspondence results affect the final 3-D reconstruction of a scene or object. Correlation has been commonly used in the past to produce dense disparity maps for correspondence. However, most classical linear correlation methods fail near depth discontinuities and in the presence of occlusions. Many robust methods have been proposed that claim to effectively deal with some or all of these issues. This thesis presents five requirements that should be met by a nonlinear robust correlation method. Several robust correspondence methods will be compared, and their utility on different data sets will be demonstrated. Based on these results, a hybrid solution to the correspondence problem is proposed that represents a compromise between the speed of classical correlation and the improved results obtained from a more robust correspondence method. The new hybrid correlation method can be used with the CardEye system. Since the CardEye system has a novel three-camera head, there exists more than just one method of performing the correspondence. Two of those methods are presented and evaluated in this thesis also. One method represents a slight modification of the correspondence method used with two images. The other one heavily exploits the v epipolar constraint, which can be used since the geometry of the cameras is known from camera calibration. Lastly, a new selective median filter is proposed to smooth the disparity maps produced by the different correspondence methods. The median filter is slightly modified to reduce the effect of removal of the ends of lines, one-pixel-wide lines and corners by the filtering.

Robust Similarity Measures for Stereo Correspondence
Normalized cross correlation (NCC), Sum of squared differences (SSD), and Sum of absolute differences (SAD) are the linear correlation measures generally used for stereo correspondence. These measures fail to establish the correspondence under nonideal conditions such as specular reflection, occlusion etc. In this paper, the similarity measures for stereo correspondence based on rank correlatio...
متن کاملDetermining the dominant plane from uncalibrated stereo vision by a robust and convergent iterative approach without correspondence
A robust, iterative approach is introduced for finding the dominant plane in a scene using stereo vision. Neither camera calibration nor stereo correspondence is required. Iterative two-step methods have been applied to various problems in computer vision, but only recently Cohen has formalized a framework that guarantees (at least local) convergence of such methods. In this paper we adopt this...
متن کاملRobust 3-dimensional object recognition using stereo vision and geometric hashing
We propose a technique that combines geometric hashing with stereo vision. The idea is to use the robustness of geometric hashing to spurious data to overcome the correspondence problem, while the stereo vision setup enables direct model matching using the 3-D object models. Furthermore, because the matching technique relies on the relative positions of local features, we should be able to perf...
متن کاملDirect Shape Carving: Smooth 3D Points and Normals for Surface Reconstruction
This paper proposes a method for reconstructing a smooth and accurate 3D surface. Recent machine vision techniques can reconstruct accurate 3D points and normals of an object. The reconstructed point cloud is used for generating its 3D surface by surface reconstruction. The more accurate the point cloud, the more correct the surface becomes. For improving the surface, how to integrate existing ...
متن کاملA Survey on Stereo Matching Techniques for 3D Vision in Image Processing
Extraction of three-dimensional scene from the stereo images is the most effective research area in the field of computer vision. Stereo vision constructs the actual three-dimensional scene from two stereo images having different viewpoints. Stereo matching is a correspondence problem, that means it ascertains which part of image corresponds to which part of another image ,where variations insi...
